Living Things

Our faces are not the sum of who we are, we are our lives and we create the worlds that we live in. We are more than our appearance. So in portraits I use the genre to say other things. Colors, props, composition, the gaze, all these things can all tell us who a person is.

I like to have heartbeats around me. I like life, people, animals, children; I love the grumpiness, the giggles; the personalities of all living things and put a bit of that fondness onto my paintings.

I love what makes things live, the gossip of animals, “that’s my food” said with ears back or a curl of a lip. “Please scratch me” with a wiggling top lip and a wag of a tail. It is with sympathy that I draw the things that I love.
